As soon as she appeared at The X Factor audition at London's O2 Arena, the show's producers knew that they had television dynamite on their hands. Every series of the Saturday night show must produce its Cinderella story, but surely this surpassed even their wildest expectations.

Rachel Hylton, 26, had five children by five different fathers - the first arriving when she was just 13. She had been addicted to crack cocaine and had also served two prison sentences, including one for burglary.
